As a general rule of thumb colleges and universities look for the following elements in perspective students. This list is not exclusive. When in doubt, contact your college counselor or the college directly for clarification. 1) The following are recommendations that most state supported colleges feel provide the most adequate training for students who intend to pursue a four year degree: English 4 credits Mathematics 3 credits Science 3 credits Foreign Language 2 credits Social Studies 3 credits Fine or Performing Arts 1 credit 2) SAT/ACT tests - Most colleges and universities require that you take the SAT and/or ACT. 3) G.P.A. - colleges and universities will take a look at your cumulative GPA, and class rank 4) Courses Taken - Colleges will look at course work variety and level of difficulty 5) AP courses - when looking at what courses you have taken, colleges will also look to see if you have taken any advanced placement courses 6) Letters of Recommendation - some colleges and universities require 2 or 3 7) Essays - colleges may require students to write essays 8) Student Activities - colleges and universities will also examine what you were involved in during High School (leadership positions, volunteer, sports, employment, community service, school clubs/organizations, etc.) 9) Awards & Honors - colleges and universities may also look at past awards and honors you have earned throughout your high school career |
