Edible Book Contest 2008

Seton High School’s Library/Information Center recently held an Edible Book Contest.  Students were encouraged to create an edible representation of a book.   Over 100 students participated, creating 75 entries.

The edible creations were on display in the Library.  Throughout the day students and staff members  visited the Library and cast votes for their favorite in each of the 8 categories.  The winners received a commemorative certificate and gift cards to book stores and local restaurants.

Some students chose a book near and dear to their hearts, others recreated a favorite childhood memory.  “Our goal was to inspire creativity in the students and celebrate books, food and innovative thinking,” said Monica Williams-Mitchell, Seton’s library information specialist.   “I was very impressed with the number of students who participated.”
We took the famous author and philosopher Sir Francis Bacon literally when he said, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested,” joked Ms. Williams-Mitchell.

Corrine McWilliams stopped by the display with her sophomore English class. “People were really creative and I was amazed at the all the cakes and creations.”
Sophomores Lynn Jennings and Jenna Rolfes entered on a cake based on Crockett Johnson’s book, Harold and the Purple Crayon.  “I received this book as a present for my second birthday.  It’s a book I’ve always enjoyed reading and making the cake brought back many great memories for me,” said Jenna.
Based on the votes by students, staff members and the Principal Susan Gibbons, the following students received prizes:
