Hear an introduction to On the Same Page Getting the word out about our project at the beginning involved an introductory letter, an announcement of the essay contest, an invitation to the breakfast event, and an invitation to a family scrapbook evening. On the Same Page provided a rich variety of possibilities for cross-curricular studies. The library offered quite a few ideas to teachers for research and exploration.
Seton alumna Elizabeth Weigand, class of 1995, and a librarian with the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, came to Seton's library to kick off the event. She shared background about Amy Tan, a video clip and some discussion, and fortune cookies provided by PLCH. Sister Josetta Chu came from the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse to instruct Art 4 students in the art of Chinese calligraphy. Sister Benedicta Mahoney, a former Seton English teacher who now works in the Archives at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, came to share the story of the mission that the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati conducted in Wu Chang, China from 1937-1949. She brought with her a number of photographs and artifacts to enhance her talk. The results of all this activity around the book included displays of artifacts generously lent by Principal Susan Gibbons, Development Director Ginny Wiltse, Secretary Ruth Busche, and the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Archives. The cafeteria staff prepared a special lunch buffet of Chinese-inspired dishes. The winners of the essay contest: senior Abbey Schwandner, junior Kaitie Adams, sophomore Karen Puttman and freshman Angie Studt, shared their winning entries at the assembly, and the event was covered in the Community Press, as well as the Seton Connection (continued here). Student writers also debated the value of the project in a pair of op-ed pieces on the Seton Connection. Parents and other guests enjoyed the day so much they sent thank yous (just one example).
