Students today need stable values and truths off which to “bounce” current beliefs and fads. Roman/Greek culture provides this stability as they grow in awareness of the Roman/Greek roots in their Catholic faith and in American Government and society.
Latin students are spirited, eager to learn and enthusiastic about class and the Latin Club activities. As a result, the students’ lives are enriched, their beliefs broadened and their experiences increased.
Students also improve and increase their English vocabulary and become proficient in the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Latin so that they do well on college entrance tests, the National Latin Test and any other competition to which they are invited. They develop skill and ease in translating Latin to English and English to Latin.
Latin students must participate in school and community activities. They help increase Latin enrollment by advertising events in school – both in English and Latin. Thus Latin and the spirited Latin students are well-known in the school community.
Latin is a rewarding and valuable learning – and teaching – experience. The Latin teacher and club moderator, Sr. Mary Dolores, maintains membership in the American Classical League, the Ohio Classical Conference, the Cincinnati Association of Teachers of the Classics, and Pompeiiana.
Latin Club is a very active club at Seton which helps students through SPARC on the weekends and periodically in the Super Saturday program. This is our way of getting young students excited about Latin. The club also has a Latin Week and Latin Day in the spring and celebrates Saturnalia the week before Christmas. On special Latin holidays the club sells sundaes at all of the lunches.
